AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin police arrested a 22-year-old man Friday night who they believe is linked to a 2009 homicide.
Ernest Alonzo Moreno was booked into the Travis County jail on charges of murder and an Immigration and Naturalization Service detainer, meaning he is in the country illegally.
Moreno is the second suspect to be arrested for the shooting death of Juan Carlos Jimenez-Vega on December 27. Police arrested and charged Louis Gonzalez on December 28 for Murder. He remains in custody.
Police found 23-year-old Juan Carlos Jimenez-Vega shot to death inside an apartment in the 8800 block of North Plaza Drive after responding to a shooting call.
A witness said he saw Vega open the door to his apartment and heard a suspect speak to him before hearing a single gunshot.
"He willfully discharged the firearm into the apartment and struck and killed our victim, but whether that was his intended target or not, I'm not sure," said Austin Police Department Sgt. Joseph Chacon in December.
Vega reportedly collapsed and died in the doorway of his apartment.
Back in December police said they would investigate the cell phone records between Vega and his suspected killer to see if any details shed light on what may have led to the alleged killing. It is unclear if those records are included in the newly developed information which revealed Moreno as a second suspect.
This case remains under investigation by APD Homicide detectives. This was Austin's 22nd homicide of 2009.
