AUSTIN (KXAN) – The Better Business Bureau shredded a total of 202,000 pounds of consumers’ confidential documents between the eight "Shred Day" events held throughout Central Texas last month, the consumer organization said Thursday.

More than 5,000 cars visited the events held in Austin, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Killeen and the Permian Basin. In addition, Goodwill collected and recycled 15,176 pounds of electronics and 3,957 pounds of cardboard.

“This was the biggest turnout we’ve had since we started holding Shred Day seven years ago,” said Carrie A. Hurt, the BBB's president and CEO  for Central, Coastal, Southwest Texas and the Permian Basin. “We are proud of the impact these events have on our local communities.”

To illustrate the effect that Shred Day had on local communities, the amount of material shred and recycled is saving the equivalent of:

  • 1,717 trees
  • 202 barrels of oil
  • 707,000 gallons of water
  • 414,100 kilowatt hours of electricity.
