AUSTIN (KXAN) - The manufacturer of Worm Shield (ivermectin/pyrantel) is recalling two of its heartworm medications. The company is asking dogs weighing 75 pounds or more be taken to their veterinarian as soon as possible and tested for heart worms - saying the medicines may not be working.

Banfield Pet Hospital is sending out letters to customers notifying them the medication in the six-month packages of Worm Shield may not work to protect against heart worms. They ask customers to call 1-800-768-8858.

The two lots impacted are for small dogs up to 20 pounds (Lot number 0-9-0-0-7-3) and large dogs between 51 and 100 pounds (Lot number 0-9-0-0-9-5.)

You can return the product to your veterinarian for replacement medications.
