Child wrote book to pay for D.C. trip

NEW YORK (KXAN) - Among the crowd at Education Nation is an inspiring eighth grader from Killeen who did not take "no" for an answer.

Madu Eneli's parents told him they were not going to pay for his $3,000 trip to Washington D.C. in January to attend the Presidential inauguration with a group of middle school students.

Madu, who attends Union Grove Middle School, remembered a lesson he learned from a leadership conference.

He started writing a book called Am I Ready for Middle School? He shared solutions to challenges he struggled with when he started middle school, such as how to take effective notes and how to become organized.

"I wanted to help other students so that way they could get a better education and be more prepared so it would come across easier to them," said Madu.

The 56-page book was published in August and costs $12. Madu has sold about 250 copies and only needs another $500 to pay for the trip.

"When my husband and I said "no" I wasn't sure what he would do with that, but I wanted to see what he would do and he really pleasantly surprised us," said Madu's mother, Aya.
