DALLAS (AP) - Six Flags Over Texas shut down the Texas Giant roller coaster much of last week after one of its cars lost its proper position on the track and began gouging the rails.

A veteran safety inspector called the coaster closure at the Arlington, Texas park during the height of the summer season, a very rare occurrence.

"Modern coasters have redundant safety features that ensure the train is not going to fly off the track," said Barry Richard.

Park spokeswoman Sharon Parker said the staff detected an error with one of the cars. Later, she said that hot, dry weather caused track misalignment.
