UT receiver charged with aggravated assault

AUSTIN (KXAN) - University of Texas wide receiver Cayleb Jones has been charged with aggravated assault.

An arrest affidavit indicates Jones assaulted Joseph Swaysland , a sophomore on the UT men's tennis team, at a bar on Sixth Street around 1:50 a.m. on Feb. 22.

The affidavit said Jones, 19, observed Swaysland talking to a woman, also a UT athlete, and became upset. Jones then punched Swaysland in the face, fracturing his jaw, the affidavit said.

According to the affidavit, Jones and the woman had previously dated but the relationship ended some time ago. The woman told detectives the relationship ended on bad terms and Jones had been jealous ever since. She also told detectives Jones has anger issues.

A week before the incident, Jones saw Swaysland talking with the woman, the affidavit said. The woman told detectives that Jones approached her and said, "I don't like the way you are happy and I don't want you talking to him," referring to Swaysland. According to the affidavit, Jones then turned to Swaysland and threatened to fight him if he talked to the woman again.

After the incident, Jones and the woman reached out to a coach. The coach told detectives Jones confessed to hitting the victim, the affidavit said. The coach then advised Jones to speak with his parents and obtain an attorney and told the woman to speak with her coaches.

“We are aware of Cayleb’s situation and disappointed any time one of our players is accused of wrongdoing,” head coach Mack Brown said. “We have talked with Cayleb and his family, and he has been suspended from all team activities pending the completion of the legal process. Any further action will be handled at the conclusion of the legal process.”

Jones, a sophomore, is a graduate of Austin High. He played in 11 games and recorded two catches during the 2012 season.

Second-degree felony charges carry a penalty of two to 20 years in prison if convicted. Jones bonded out of jail on Tuesday.
