AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin ISD's newest superintendent, Dr. Maria Carstarphen, spent the day getting to know part of the East Austin community.

Dr. Carstarphen joined teachers, parents, and students at Dobie Middle School Saturday.

She was the guest of honor and speaker at the 29th African American Men and Boys and Women and Girls Conference.

The theme of this year's event was "Strategy for Conflict Management", which is one of many goals the new school leader has placed on her agenda for the school future.

"It's an opportunity for us to engage, empower and educate our youth about their responsibilities in being better students and better adults for the future," said Dr. Meria Carstarphen AISD Superintendant.

The four-hour event was held to encourage a better community.
