AUSTIN (KXAN) - A family who was nearing the end of the adoption process when an earthquake hit Haiti eleven days ago brought their young son home Saturday.
"It's over," said Jaimey Ivey, Amos's adoptive mother, as she choked back tears. "I just keep saying, it's over. He's home. We're done. My family is complete."
Those are the feelings that overcame Jaimey as she guided her newly adopted son Amos, 4, down the escalator at ABIA Saturday afternoon.
It's a day the Ivey family has dreamt about repeatedly.
"We would imagine this day right here for the last year and a half of living in Austin," said Aaron Ivey, while holding Amos in his arms. "Imagine coming down that escalator."
It was a dream almost shattered by the earthquake that rocked Haiti nearly two weeks ago that left thousands dead.
The Ivey family, close to finishing the adoption process at the time, were unsure if or when they would see their son.
Aaron, a musician by trade, turned to song to help his family forge on into the unknown.
The family also relied on their faith and friends.
"Today is really the answer of a thousand prayers from a thousand people," explained Kevin Peck, the executive pastor at Austin Stone Community Church.
"I've been praying all week long for him to come home and not have to see any of the sites or smell the bad smells there," said Roberta Cobb, a fellow churchgoer and friend of the Ivey family.
It's a day the family said they won't ever forget.
"It's overwhelming for sure, you know we've got a lot of friends here in Austin that've just been living this journey with us," Aaron added while glancing at about 50 of his closet family and friends that gathered in ABIA's baggage claim area to welcome Amos home.
The journey will continue over the next few months, as Amos learns his new home and gets to know his fellow siblings, including a sister who was also recently adopted from Haiti.
The Ivey's said when it comes to the future, they have a simple plan.
"Just to stay home, not leave our house for a week, just be a family," Jaimey said as she smiled at Amos.
Amos has a lot to learn over the next few months, but Saturday brought him a lot of firsts including his first airplane ride and his first time riding an escalator.
