AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin police are used to getting 911 calls from victims following burglaries. But from the accused burglar himself? That is what police said happened last month following a burglary in the city's north side.
Emergency operators got a 911 call in the early morning hours of Feb. 26 from a Whataburger in the 9500 block of North Lamar Blvd. The man said he had cut himself badly while trying to look for food in a dumpster outside the fast-food restaurant.
The officer said the man, identified in documents as Brandon Seffens, 18, did not look like he had been cut by a metal dumpster, but the officer said the cut looked very clean. Seffens was treated and released from the hospital.
It was not until employees at the Direct Auto Insurance company just beside the Whataburger arrived at work that they noticed they had been burglarized overnight. That is when police said they figured out Seffens was lying to them.
When police got to the business, they said they found a broken glass window with blood on the ground. It was not only that, but investigators also noticed a trail of blood leading south to the end of the building, then leading in the direction of the restaurant.
The arrest-warrant affidavit for Seffens did not indicate if
they have connected the blood found on the scene to Seffens, but he
has been charged with burglary. Police said Seffens has been
charged in the past with assaulting a public servant, theft,
vehicle theft, possession of marijuana, evading arrest, assault and
criminal trespass.
