NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas (KXAN) - The drought conditions Central Texas has experienced for some time has actually allowed water levels to increase by 150 percent in the Guadalupe River in New Braunfels, Texas.
Current drought conditions increased the demand for water downstream from Canyon Reservoir, resulting in a water level increase from 50- to 125 cubic feet per second.
This means 125 cubic feet of water flow every second, and the higher levels allow water to be “floatable,” allowing tubers to enjoy their visit at the Guadalupe River.
"We received word this morning that the release from Canyon Lake will be increased to 125 cfs, which is a good recreational flow for us for the Fourth of July weekend," said Judy Young, director of the Greater New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce Convention and Visitors Bureau.
"We look forward to a great week on the river in New Braunfels,” said Young.
National holidays, such as Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day tend to attract visitors from across the state to New Braunfels.
“This increased flow will benefit the larger crowds we expect over the holiday weekend on both the Comal and the Guadalupe rivers, ensuring a better experience and a safe, fun time for everyone," said City River Manager Nathan Pence.
The increased flow level of 125 cubic feet per second will continue through Sunday morning and end that afternoon.
