ROUND ROCK (KXAN) - More than 100 parents, students and community members lined Gattis School Road in Round Rock to honor 12-year-old Shaylah Dame. They held up her photo and signs with words of caution and remembrance.
Her father Billy Dame was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support.
"I have a lot of beautiful friends and family and people I don't know who are here for a reason," said Dame. "I don't even have the words to say."
Shaylah was trying to cross the busy street Thursday night when she was hit and killed.
"My daughter will not die in vain, and we want to make sure that this will not happen again," said Dame.
Her parents and others are now pushing for a safer street with a crosswalk and street light. Many children like Shaylah cross the street to get to the skate park and Clay Madsen Recreation Center.
Karen Belmonte came out to remember her good friend.
"I remember Thursday after school, I came home walking with her," said Karen Belmonte. " Later that night, I found out she passed away. I was like, 'Oh my gosh how did this happen?'"
Her mother knows just how dangerous the road can be and worries whenever her daughter crosses the street.
"I always have to let them know to watch out, because I know cars don't stop. Just like they're drag racing from one light to the other," said Anna Belmonte, Concerned Parent.
The group is gathering signatures to give to Round Rock city leaders who are aware of the situation. They are hoping City leaders take action to prevent another tragedy on this street.
