AUSTIN (KXAN) - Blue Santa, the program that delivers food and toys to families in need, hosted a big gala at the Broken Spoke. At that event, singer-songwriter Larry Shannon Hargrove, was in attendance.
"I saw the need for more funds," said Hargrove. "This has to be a year round event fundraising drive, because money is harder to raise this year. So, I wrote this song called ' He's the Chief of Police.'"
Hargrove's idea was to write a song about Art Acevedo and for every CD sold, $5 would go toward the Blue Santa program. After meeting Acevedo, Hargrove said writing the song was simple.
"After watching Art Acevedo actually driving a patrol car and is in full uniform, he sort of wrote the song himself," said Hargrove. "It was New Year's Eve, it was almost midnight, and I was downtown [in] Austin, Texas and the horn blew, and when [Acevedo] rolled the window down, he said 'Hey Larry!' And I said 'Oh my God, that's the chief. He's out here working on New Year's Eve.' So, I thought his brand of policing is special, and I think he's doing a wonderful job. So, we wrote [the] song."
The song is certainly full of great descriptions like his history with the California Highway Patrol and his famed nickname "rockstar." Lyrics like "he don't wear Brooks Brothers suits or hide behind a big desk" and "he's in full uniform, driving a patrol car and making arrests" will make many tap their foot.
The CD can be purchased at Waterloo Records on Sixth Street and Lamar Boulevard, or Music Mania at Interstate 35 and 38 1/2 Street (next to Fiesta). You can listen to the full song here.
