AUSTIN (KXAN) - It is getting harder to keep up with which intersections have red light cameras. Sunday at midnight, four more red light cameras will be added to the existing six currently snapping pictures of red light runners on Austin streets. They will be working at the following new intersections:

  • Wells Branch Parkway and Loop 1 (MoPac) eastbound on the northbound frontage road
  • IH 35 and 11th Street eastbound on the northbound frontage road
  • Ben White and Lamar boulevards eastbound at the southeast intersection
  • Ben White and Lamar westbound at the northwest intersection

All nine intersections deemed the most dangerous in Austin due to red light runners are now covered.

"I think it's great," said Austin driver Michelle Hogan. "If we could get one at Bee Cave and 360, that would be even better." The mother of three said she feels much safer with an extra eye in the sky.

As of March 25, the city has cited 5,653 red-light runners with the help of the cameras. An Austin police officer sits down and views every video and photograph of possible violations before mailing a ticket to the owner of the vehicle. The fine is $75, and drivers are welcome to appeal.

Each camera costs the city $5,000 a month to operate. The city is pleased with the results so far, even though they have had trouble getting violators to pay their fine.
