BASTROP, Texas (KXAN) - The nearly 1,500 acre Wilderness Ridge fire continues to burn in Bastrop County. Firefighters expect some spots to continue burning into next week.

The Bastrop Fire Chief Henry Perry said the lesson to be learned is to make sure you have a "defensible space" around your home.

He added that the 28 homes and more than a dozen businesses that were lost in the fire had dry brush and debris too close to the buildings.

"We either couldn't get trucks to them, the driveways weren't wide enough or when we got there, there was no way we could put fire men there to make a defense on the house," said Perry.

Now city and county authorities said they are working to get FEMA aid to the fire victims.
