AUSTIN (KXAN) - A powerful storm system churning over the Rockies is taking aim on Texas, and will bring increasing rain and some thunderstorms to Central Texas Thursday.
The storm system is moving very slowly, and showers are expected to increase Thursday morning with some thunderstorm development taking place during the afternoon.
Some of the thunderstorms could become severe, with hail, damaging winds or isolated tornadoes.
Precipitation won't end quickly, as upper-level waves of instability will continue to traverse the state through Friday morning, but decreasing clouds and drier weather should follow by evening.
While there could be some isolated areas that receive 1- to 2 inches of rainfall through Thursday evening, most of the rainfall totals in our area are expected to average less than 1 inch.
The heaviest rainfall with this system is likely to be over Southeast Texas, where more than 6 inches could fall, resulting in possible flooding in the Houston area by Friday.
Much cooler weather is expected Friday, with afternoon highs remaining in the 60s. A pleasant Halloween weekend is expected, though nights and early mornings will be cool, with lows in the 40s to low 50s.
Highs will climb into the 70s Saturday and Sunday.
