Residents are being asked to avoid a local swimming area after an overflow caused a sewage spill.

Austin Water Utility officials say the incident happend Saturday afternoon in a canyon below West Rim Drive.  They say a blockage caused the overflow from a manhole, which is in a tributary of Bull Creek.

Crews have cleaned up the sewage spill and flushed the creek bed.

Officials say the swimming area wasn't affected by the overflow.  However, they are still asking residents and their pets to avoid the swimming area.

Results from water quality sampling should be complete in the next few days.
