KILLEEN (KXAN) - An early morning fire at a Texas animal shelter killed more than 100 cats and dogs.

It happened early Sunday morning at the Second Chance Animal shelter in Killeen.

Shelter volunteers said the fire started in the kitchen. Most of the animals died from smoke inhalation.

Second Chance is a no-kill shelter, but today volunteers had to euthanize some of the animals injured in the fire.

The shelter normally houses about 300 animals.  Volunteers are taking in the animals that survived this morning's fire.

No word yet on how the fire started.
