Austin (KXAN) - After voting numbers began rolling in, Carole Keeton Strayhorn's arrival time at her campaign watch party kept getting pushed back further.
She was finally spotted at 9:30 p.m. on the sidewalk walking up to a temporary podium, created with a table from Jaime's Mexican Village. The 69-year-old had her arms wrapped around three of her granddaughters, and started hugging supporters who had been waiting on her to arrive.
"Congratulations to Leffingwell and McCracken for a job well done," she said.
After thanking family, friends, voters and Austinites, the former Austin mayor said she will continue pouring her heart into Austin - mayor or not. When asked what is next for someone who has made a go for Texas governor, served on Austin ISD's school board and been the Texas State Comptroller, she said she will start by being the best grandmother she can be.
Strayhorn said it is too premature to say who she will vote for in the run-off race between Lee Leffingwell and Brewster McCracken.
