AUSTIN (KXAN) - The budget is the only bill the Legislature is required to pass and Sen. Steve Ogden, R-Bryan, said they are right on track.
"It's almost unheard of to vote unanimously on every vote in the budget conference committee," said Ogden.
With less general revenue to work with, Ogden was grateful to have federal stimulus money to fill in the gaps for the $182.3 billion budget. He said the budget for 2010-2011 is based on the economy staying flat and not getting worse.
"Texans can be sure we are in good shape and we have our rainy day fund still in tact," he said.
Ogden in the Senate, Rep. Jim Pitts in the House and Gov. Perry worked together to come to a budget all could agree upon. Perry got what he asked for and also requested that none of the stimulus money be used for his own projects. General revenue will be used instead to restore the Governor's mansion as well as fund the Governor's other priorities.
Other highlights of the budget include closing down two TYC facilities in West Texas. However, lawmakers will beef up spending for state schools in order to meet the Department of Justice requirements and it puts $500 million toward alternative treatment.
"For the first time, those with intellectual disabilities will have a choice in where they go," said Ogden. Texans who would normally go to state schools will have the chance to stay closer to home in community based programs.
The budget will now head to the House for a final vote. Ogden said he is confident it will "pass overwhelmingly."
