BASTROP COUNTY, TEXAS (KXAN) - Brenda McCurry is amazed at the transformation of her property and the kindness of her neighbors.
"When they showed up out here, it was a miracle," said McCurry.
Volunteers helped her along with dozens of homeowners devastated by a huge wildfire near Bastrop. A massive fire broke out along Highway 71 and Alum Creek Road February 28. It scorched 1,500 acres and destroyed 32 homes and businesses.
"I felt like we were all blessed to have them show up, because there were people like me who didn't know which way to turn," said McCurry.
The fire destroyed her house.
Three months later, the grass is green, and plants are growing. Now, McCurry finally has a home.
"It was beautiful," said McCurry. "There's people we'll never forget"
Hundreds of volunteers dedicated their weekends since the fire, helping homeowners rebuild after losing everything.
"It's very touching to think about the people who lost everything, and you think, 'What can I do?'" said David Redd, Volunteer. "So as a community, we try to help them as much as we can."
Volunteers formed a strong connection with fire victims, sharing in their loss and now their recovery.
"They go from nothing," said Amber Wilson, River Valley Christian Fellowship. "They have no hope, and then they have people like us helping them all the way through til the end."
Volunteers said the reward is worth it.
"We're not getting anything out of this than the joy of watching them come back." said Wilson.
With their hardwork, these volunteers are restoring homes and hope.
Volunteers are now helping fire victims install water and electricity in their new homes. If you would like to donate, call Amber Wilson at (512) 297-6800.
