AUSTIN (KXAN) - Experts advise you take your dog for walks earlier or later in the day. Try to stay in the shade and avoid the hot concrete because it can burn a pup's paw pad. Always carry a water bottle and make sure your dog is hydrated. A good trick to cool your dog down is to tie a wet bandanna around the neck.

All these precautions will help prevent your pet from heat exhaustion and heat stroke, which can be deadly. Signs of dog heat distress are heavy panting, glazed eyes, vomiting, or a purple tongue.
