AUSTIN (KXAN) - D-Day for the switch is looming and for those of us who still have to hop on the DTV train, there's one last stop.

The DeWitty Job Training and Employment Center in East Austin has transformed itself into the DTV information center until June 12th.

Staff members at the center will show people how to hook up the converter box to their television. They will also provide free literature on the switch and help visitors apply for coupons that will get them a box either for free or at a heavily discounted price.

After June 12, all television stations will switch their broadcasts from analog to digital signals (DTV). In order to still receive over the air programming, viewers must buy a digital converter box, buy a digital television set or purchase some type of cable or satellite service.

Neilsen statistics show Austin and Central Texas is the third least-prepared city in the nation for the DTV switch with at least 30,000 people who still need to gear up or they could lose television access.

The FCC's website also has a list of local companies that will install your converter box free of charge.

The information center will be open:

  • 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 3
  • 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Thursday, June 4
  • 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Friday, June 5
