AUSTIN, Texas (KXAN) - Police say a man who shot and killed Paul Astran, 59, in a drive-by early Wednesday meant to shoot someone else, but got the house wrong.

After hearing news that the grandfather had died, Catalino Carbajal, 28, turned himself in to police later in the day, officials said.

"He wanted to confess to his involvement in the shooting, he actually said he was the one who did the shooting," said Lt. Mark Spangler, Austin Police Department.

Astran's family was shocked by what appeared to be a random drive-by shooting that left him dead in his home in the 3400 block of Pickle Drive.

The family is calling this a random tragedy. At about 11 Tuesday night three shots were fired, according to Astran's family members. One went through the front of the home and went into Astran's bedroom.

"He was asleep facing his back to the wall," said Roxanne Astran, granddaughter. "He was more concerned about my grandma's safety than his."

Astran and his wife were in bed asleep when police said 28 year old Catalino Carbajal shot at the home, thinking he was shooting at someone who had stolen his crack cocain. Instead the shot hit a devoted man who protected his family even to his death.

"He pushed my grandma off the bed so he thought of her first before he thought of himself," said Roxanne Astran.

The family is still in the process of making funeral arrangements.

Carbajal is being held at Travis County Jail on Capital Murder and Evading charges. Police said their could be more arrests in the case.
