Famed Austinite walked out in full Leslie style

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin’s favorite cross dresser, Leslie Cochran, was discharged from a rehab center around 12:45pm Friday, according to a spokesperson.  Doctors say he's doing very, very well.

“Leslie left in typical Leslie style—with a zebra skin hat and vest,” Kathy Rupert of Central Texas Rehab said in a telephone interview Friday. (Rupert said he was wearing pants.)

“He walked out with close friends that will take care of and keep an eye on him,” Rupert continued.

Rupert says they’re recommending he follow up with continued rehabilitation on an out-patient basis.

Cochran was hospitalized after collapsing on October 3rd. The well-known Austinite was in critical condition when he arrived at UMC Brackenridge early that morning.

Cochran’s prognosis was very bad early in his hospitalization, with nurses and doctors questioning whether he would be able to care for himself. But the man known to many as simply “Leslie” rebounded quickly.

He was transferred to the rehabilitation center on October 16.

Well wishes for Cochran have flooded online messages boards, and several vigils were held in his support.
