Austin (KXAN) - “Gentleman Broncos” first made its premiere in Austin during Fantastic Fest. Today it’s opening nationwide.
The film is the latest by the acclaimed writer/director, husband
and wife team responsible for Napoleon Dynamite.
It's all about a home schooled teenage boy who dreams of one
day becoming a fantasy writer. When he attends a fantasy convention
he meets popular novelist Ronald Chevalier played by Jemaine
Clement.
Since this writer is desperate for ideas he rips off the
boy’s book titled Broncos for his own personal gain.
Turns out the premise for the movie is not all fantasy. "Jerusha has a cousin who lives in Alaska who writes really off beat fantasy and science fiction," said Jared Hess, writer director of Gentlemen Broncos. "Most of the stories would make his mom cry and we just ran with that idea."
Sam Rockwell is the fictional story's title character who helps
bring the book to life.
Rockwell said he describes himself as a mild scifi
geek. "I have an 18 inch alien doll at home and an alien
fetus that comes out of the stomach," said Rockwell.
But there's a lot more wacky sci-fi action in the movie.
"Whenever we did a take and the crew would be laughing so we knew we were doing something right," said Michael Angarano who stars as Benjamin in Gentlemen Broncos.
Gentlemen Broncos is rated PG-13.
