Additional Texas National Guard battalion deploys to Kuwait

AUSTIN (KXAN) - The Texas Army National Guard's 36th Infantry Division said goodbye to the soldiers of the 449th Aviation Support Battalion as they prepared to leave for Kuwait on Wednesday. at the Austin Army Aviation Support Facility.

The battalion will remain in Kuwait for nine months in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  Operation Enduring Freedom is the official U.S. name for the war in Afghanistan and its counter-terrorism initiatives following the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Once there, the battalion’s expected mission will be to assist the Texas Army National Guard's 36th Combat Aviation Brigade, which has already begun a deployment to Kuwait.

The 449th Aviation Support Battalion headquartered in San Antonio is made up of about 260 soldiers, with the majority of them calling Central Texas their home.
