KILLEEN, Texas (KXAN) - A look inside Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan's apartment, opened to the press as Hasan awaits formal charges in connection with the killing of 13 people on Fort Hood on Nov. 5, 2009.

Hasan, 39, was living in a sparse apartment just off post.

Managers at the apartment complex Casa Del Norte set up a memorial - there are 13 US flags, one for each of those killed as well as candles, roses and photos. Neighbors said it is a constant reminder they were living next to an accused murderer and had no idea.

"It was really shocking," said Jade Blair, his neighbor. "I wouldn’t expect that because he was a really quiet guy so pretty scary."

There are few things left inside the 400-square-foot, one-bedroom apartment. However, one thing that stands out, an unusually large paper and DVD shredder.

Neighbors said the day before the massive shooting, Hasan had thrown out two, large garbage bags of shredded material. Just hours after the shooting, investigators hauled off the Dumpster and numerous items from Hasan's apartment.

There is also a prayer rug, some military gear, a psychiatrist’s examination booklet, medical paperwork, Hasan's business cards, Israeli and Jordanian coins, a dreams and interpretations book and an alarm clock. Patricia Villa said Wednesday, Hasan gave her shelves, chairs, a microwave and suits with Hasan's name still on the dry-cleaning receipt.

"I'm going to keep them," said Villa. "He gave them to me. They're mine and I need them so I am going to keep them."

However, Blair neighbor said the memorial is enough of a reminder of the pain and loss and how close she was to it all.

"He could have freaked out any second and killed us," said Blair.

This memorial will be taken down Monday. As far as the rest of the Hasan's belongs in the apartment, management said they will be contacting his family to see if they want to retrieve them.
