AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin's Marquee Music Fest welcomes all genres of music.
It is also ushering in a different sound, the gospel side of South by Southwest. Rock, country, R&B, hip-hop and grassroots music are the styles you normally hear.
Enter a set of twins, John and James Jacobs, with spiritual granting. They are 25-year-old fraternal twins dedicated to singing the words of the gospel.
They've been together all their lives, but five years ago they became "Double Portion."
"We are gospel recording artists,” said John, known to his friends as Troy. “We are going to share the gospel at South by Southwest."
Their father is a pastor, and they took to the stage at the young age of 4.
“We did not like to sing at first,” said John. “We didn't want to sing, but we had the love of God in us, so it inspired us to do what we are doing.”
Then, they created a style that modernizes traditional gospel.
“We've been singing professionally since 2002,” said James, known as Roy to his friends. “We got an album out. We got a single out, dvds. We've been singing a lot.”
"We are a gospel group mixture of R&B, hiphop and contemporary - a mixture of a lot of things," said John.
They perfect their skills each Sunday at Word of Life Christian Faith Center . They will dish out those sounds at a stage that is often hidden at the SXSW music scene.
"Gospel has been there about 2- or 3years, so we're brand new to South by Southwest,” said James. “We are really excited about it..”
"The gospel message is one that eases on people,” said John. “When your force it, the bible says, 'In love and kindness have I drawn the.' So, we're going to ease ourselves over to South by Southwest and show them the love of Christ."
These brothers said it will be a journey that SXSW-goers are ready to experience, and they plan to be a part of it for years to come.
Double Portion, or DP, will perform at 9 p.m. at Carver Museum’s Boyd Theater Friday. They are part of a gospel review at the museum.
