AUSTIN (KXAN) - You'll be surprised by the number of drivers we caught on camera using a cell phone in an active school zone. We set up at several schools around town and caught drivers in the act.
And some of the people we spoke to say some of the zones are hard to spot.
"I didn't notice it, and I don't think anyone else will either," John Jordano said.
We also followed an Austin police officer as he nabs one cell phone user.
"If I wrote 25 tickets, I would say a good 5 to 10 of those will involve cell phone use of some type. It's a very common problem," said APD Officer Michael Monroe.
And one Texas senator wants to ban the distraction permanently,
"The Texas Department of Transportation says one in four accidents in Texas involve someone either texting or driving on a cell phone. It's a major distraction. It's a major public-safety issue," said Texas Sen. Jeff Wentworth, R-San Antonio.
Tune in tonight and find out how officials are trying to control the problem. And watch as we show you how many drivers we caught breaking the law.
