As far back as the 1830s, Austin has had a plan to guide its growth.

And, like Austin itself, the plans has shifted and changed as the city's needs and its self-image have shifted and changed.

These archived photos and renderings help illustrate where Austin has been, from the unpaved grid of streets south of where the state Capitol stands to today to the maze of freeway interchanges and the still-developing commuter rail lines that will tie downtown to the suburbs.

On Wednesday, KXAN News, in partnership with Leadership Austin and Community Impact Newspaper, launch ATXpansion, a series of town hall meetings with stakeholders, decision-makers and commuters to further explore how Austin plans to grow into the 21st century.

The town hall meeting at Huston-Tillotson University will air live on KXAN from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. and stream live on www.kxan.com . Leading up to the first town hall meeting, KXAN News will air an in-depth presentation surrounding the area’s top growth topics at 6:30 p.m.
