Austin (KXAN) - Have you ever thought about doing yoga with your dog?
The craze started in New York, and now it's hit Austin - thanks to Marilyn Swick who is teaching Doga at Southpaws Playschool .
"Doga is a combination of canine massage, obedience skills, and integrating your dog into various poses," said Marilyn Swick, Blue Moon Doga Owner.
Nicole Vykoukal brought her 1-year-old pup, Johnny Austin, to the first class after practicing it at home.
"They'll come and lay by me, or they will do a downward dog pose to stretch," said Vykoukal. "I just think they are naturally kind of into it."
The idea is to use the energy from your dog to create a calm and relaxing experience. In order to get the dog calm, you start with a little massage.
"Keep your hands on them, clockwise, one and a half circles each time," said Swick as she instructed the class. "When you do this, look in your dog's eyes and see how relaxed and happy they are."
Once in a calm state, dogs are better able to get into the various yoga poses.
By holding the dog in the pose, it works on your muscle stretch and helps you bond with your dog.
"It's good for my wellness, and it's good for them," said Vykoukal.
Right now Doga is being offered once a month at Southpaws Playschool located off of South Lamar.
