AUSTIN (KXAN) - Dr. Mike Romain joins KXAN News Today to talk about the harms and benefits of using antibiotics.

Dr. Romain warns the medicine was never designed to treat virus or allergies.

When decided if you should take antibiotics Dr. Romain says to ask yourself these questions:

  • Do you have fever?
  • How long have your symptoms been?
  • Can you treat symptoms with over the counter medicine?

He warns taking antibiotics when it's not necessary or not finishing prescriptions can create super bacteria, that is hard to fight off.
