Nov. is American Diabetes month

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Diabetes comes in two forms, type 1 and 2.

Type 1 means due to a genetic trait the body isn't producing insulin. While type 2 occurs when the body won't respond to the insulin. Both types led to high blood sugar.

Type 2 also differs in it can be preventable. It is often the side effect of increased weight or little activity. Sometimes age can also be a factor in type 2 diabetes.

But according to endocrinologist, Dr. Kavita Juneja, "There is a disturbing trend occurring in our country, now it's thought that 1 out of 4 adolescence between 12 and 19 have either type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes."

Common symptoms include:

  • Increased thirst
  • Increased urination
  • Dry mouth
  • Infections
  • Darkening of the skin along the neck

Diabetes untreated can lead to damage to multiple organs including, eye damage. kidney damage and heart disease.
