AUSTIN (KXAN) - An Austin doctor has a warning for parents of children with allergies and asthma. Chief of Emergency Medicine at Dell Children's Medical Center Dr. Patrick Crocker has been treating a lot of kids lately who are bothered by multiple allergens.
Central Texas is known for allergies. The region has some sort of pollen or mold in the air at almost all times. However, Dr. Crocker says it has been pretty unusual over the past two weeks, because there have been a number of days where ragweed, pigweed, elm, mold and grass pollens have all been in the high range at one time. All of those allergens can really stress out bodies, especially small ones.
"Patients who are allergic to multiple items can get really miserable," said Chief of Emergency Medicine at Dell Children's Medical Center Dr. Patrick Crocker. "If it's tied with asthma then you can have a dangerous situation of both uncomfortable and potentially setting off a bad asthma attack."
Dr. Crocker urges parents to act early if their child has a history of allergy and asthma troubles. He said keep them on antihistamines, do nasal rinses and monitor their breathing. More rain in the forecast will only make the mold counts to only go back up.
