AUSTIN (KXAN) - Central Texas doctors tell us allergies still make up the number one problem their patients are dealing with lately. Cedar pollen is the worst offender. If you are new to the Austin area, and the cedar does not bother you, emergency physician Dr. Philip Mumm with St. David's Medical Center in Austin says that does not mean you are immune forever.
"Typically for the people who are new in town often they won't suffer from these types of allergies until they've been exposed for a year or two," said Dr. Philip Mumm. "If you haven't been exposed to cedar in the past, it may take a year or so before you start having symptoms."
Cedar allergies are also causing lots of problems for patients at St. David's Georgetown Hospital according to Dr. Johnathan Conner. The Texas MedClinic locations in north and south Austin both report a high rate of allergy patients coming to their offices as well as people with upper respiratory infections. At St. David's North Austin Medical Center, seasonal allergies and pneumonia are the big causes of concern.
