SXSW: Bob Geldof 2011 keynote speaker

Originator of "Live Aid" concerts

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Many will remember the two historic concerts called "Live Aid" that were staged in Philadelphia and London on July 13, 1985. An estimated two billion people from 60 countries watched the television show that raised money to fight starvation in Africa.

Bob Geldof is the man who was the driving force behind those events -- and he was the 2011 keynote speaker at South By Southwest on Thursday.

Twenty-six years later Geldof is still doing things to help Africa.

"I then thought that passion can't be over. That that's a ludicrous argument. That music by definition is the only means of expression of the delirium of life. The only sole expression I can imagine that goes to the joy of existence. That goes to being human," Geldof said during his keynote address.
