Mother Nature plops snowballs on fields

An unusual twist on a snow storm in Vermont

PLAINFIELD, Vt. (CNN/WCAX) - Mother Nature put an unusual twist on a snow storm in Vermont.

"Snow rollers are the coolest things in the world, or at least one of them. That's when Mother Nature decides to make her own snowballs," said WCAX Meteorologist Gary Sadowsky.

They're called snow rollers, and they're funny-looking mounds of snow that popped up in fields across the state.

They look like cinnamon rolls or the bottom part of a snowman.

They are unusual because the recipe to make them is pretty specific.

The snow rollers only form with just the right combination of sticky snow, wind and temperature. The wind gets the snow started and just rolls it right up.
