AUSTIN (KXAN) - A remake of one of the most popular 1980s movies comes out Friday – Footloose .
Kevin Bacon is replaced by newcomer Kenny Wormald as Ren MacCormack. Wormald was actually born in 1984, the same year the original came out.
But he said in an interview Friday at the KXAN studios that he has always been able to relate to the character.
"I grew up dancing and kind of got made fun of a little bit when I was younger because I would miss football and baseball for ballet. They would call me "ballet boy" and a few other things I won't say," said Wormald.
When it comes to the plo, director Craig Brewer changed part of the story line to show the car accident that led to the ban on dancing, school buses replace the tractor scene, and in this version Ren is led to the small town to live with relatives because his mother dies.
While the movie is targeting the current generation of teens, there is lots to offer fans of the original.
"Every once in a while I want to give people who love the original that moment of where 'I think I've seen this moment before,'" said Brewer.
Footloose purists will often feel that way while watching Miles Teller take on Chris Penn's role as Willard.
Of course the dancing does not disappoint. Dancing with the Stars cast member Julianne Hough plays the preacher's daughter, Ariel.
And for Wormald, who has spent his career dancing in videos for Madonna, Mariah and Christina, he's just happy to show off a different skill.
"I'm glad they let me talk now on screen instead of just hand movements," said Wormald.
Footloose is rated PG-13.
