AUSTIN (KXAN) - The traditional hot dog is getting away from its ketchup, relish, and mustard roots. More restaurants are opening focusing on the humble frankfurter. In Austin, there are already several hot dog hot spots including Man Bites Dog.

Jeremiah Allen from Man Bites Dog joined Robert Maxwell for the KXAN News At Noon. He said the interest is growing in expanding the hot dog palate with more advanced flavors.

Allen showed how you can make a high quality "Chicago-style" dog, which the restaurant calls the Abe Froman, an homage to the fictional "Sausage King of Chicago" from 1986's "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." Allen said choosing the right ingredients makes a big difference.

  • All beef frank
  • Sweet pickle relish
  • Dill pickle spear
  • Yellow mustard
  • Diced tomatoes
  • Diced onions
  • Sport peppers
  • Celery salt
