NEW YORK (KXAN) - Austin DJ Bobby Bones made a big splash in New York City Wednesday morning, getting the chance to fill-in for Regis Philbin on " LIVE! with Regis and Kelly ."
Bones was one of five selected as part of the "Men of Radio Co-Host for a Day" contest, and KXAN Austin News was there with him as he sat down next to Kelly Ripa today, in front of an audience of millions.
After a morning spent getting his hair done and make-up treatments, then meeting the guests, Bones walked into the studio at 9 a.m., and looked like a natural.
He talked about Austin and his radio show on 96.7 KISS-FM, and even joked about growing-up a skinny kid in a small town.
He had written a poem specifically for co-host Kelly Ripa and the in-studio crowd roared. Admittedly a bit nervous, Bones told Austin's KXAN after the show he thought he did OOK, but we wanted his co-hosting skills to be assessed by the person who mattered most: Kelly Ripa.
"The only people who could do it are men in radio," Ripa said, "because they are used to talking for many more hours than we are here, so obviously he's great with spontaneous conversation, great with an interview, great with working the items along during host-chat and just like having a nice talk, so he's perfect for this kind of work."
Several people from Austin flew-up to New York and were in the audience Wednesday, including the co-hosts of the Bobby Bones radio show.
KXAN Austin News will have more "behind the scenes" coverage of Bones' appearance Wednesday night on Austin News at five, and Thursday morning on Austin News Today.
The quirky thing about being in New York this time of year -- is that the return flight to Austin for Bones, KXAN's News Anchor Chris Willis and KXAN photographer Thomas Costley -- is that their flight was canceled due to the weather!
