AUSTIN (KXAN) - Summer is a time for weekends on the lake, visits with family and friends and road trips. These fun outings also mean more miles traveled and gas consumed on Texas highways.

Mark Cross with Texas Department of Transportation stopped by our studio and to tell us about their new awareness campaign: Drive Clean Across Texas.

The campaign was created together with the Texas Commission on environmental quality and other organizations to make Texans more aware of what they can do to lower emissions during the summer season.

Cross also shared some tips:

  • Drive less by cramming several trips into one rather than making multiple trips
  • Reduce idling and drive thru's
  • Keep your car well-maintained.
  • Try to avoid accelerating and decelerating too much
  • Avoid congestion times on the road

Cross also says the best thing you can do is drive low emission vehicle. You have your shot at winning a hybrid car by entering a contest here .
