AUSTIN (KXAN) -  O. Henry, the pen name of the prolific author William Porter, began his writing career in Austin.

Known for his use of wit and irony, his legacy lives on to this day in the annual pun-off.

The writer's birthday was celebrated with a crawl through Austin, at the O. Henry Museum, Austin History Center and Capitol Visitors Center.

"Everyone knows about the Keep Austin Weird campaign, but this exhibition and the O. Henry Birthday Crawl show that Austin has always embraced new ideas, artists and weirdness. Austin really has always been a haven for vibrant, interesting people, like O. Henry," said Terri Schexnayder, board president of Friends of the Museum.

The Queen Anne Cottage off East 5th Street, now the writer's museum, used to be his families home through the late 1800s.

The U.S. postal service also honored the author's birthday recently though a postage stamp bearing his likeness.
