AUSTIN (KXAN) - After a two-year absence, the Austin Trail of Lights is making a comeback, adding attractions and experiences to expand this cherished Austin event.

The revival of this beloved Austin tradition is the result of a generous partnership between the RunTex Carrozza Foundation, Forefront Austin, and HEB.

“The Trail of Lights is an iconic celebration of authentic Austin,” said Paul Carrozza, Founder and CEO of the RunTex Carrozza Foundation.  “So many people have asked for this, wanting this tradition to be brought back to Austin.  Trail of Lights is a piece of Austin’s history and a platform bringing together Central Texans to participate in a vibrant event and advance the community.  Great things happen when we come together to celebrate."

“H-E-B is honored to turn the lights back on again this year as the lead sponsor for the Trail of Lights, Powered by H-E-B,” said Leslie Sweet, H-E-B Director of Public Affairs.  “H-E-B is also bringing a new surprise from the North Pole.  Through H-E-B’s Read 3 early childhood literacy program, H-E-Buddy and Santa are joining together to give each child that attends a free book."

The Austin Trail of Lights, Powered by HEB , promises to be bigger and better than ever with millions of festive lights and a post-trail experience for additional family fun including live music, family activities, and much more.  The Trail of Lights has been an Austin tradition since 1965 when it was known as Yule Fest.  In 1992, this cherished event became what is now known as the Trial of Lights.

“Forefront Austin is proud to partner with the RunTex Carrozza Foundation to bring back Trail of Lights 2012 as a celebration for, by and of Central Texas,” said Jay Watson, CEO of Forefront Austin. “Through collaborative partnerships with corporate sponsors, foundations and individuals, we are raising the funds to produce this event with no taxpayer burden.  We are grateful to our sponsors who recognize how important this is to our community."

This year's events will include performers such as dancers, musicians, and carolers, and a different theme every night including Heritage Night, School Spirit Night, and Military Appreciation Night.  Food and drink will be available including hot chocolate, cider, and bites from local food trailers.  The festivities kick-off on Sunday, December 16 at Zilker Park and run through Sunday, December 23.

Think you have what it takes to compete with the Trail of Lights?  Click here to submit your home or business as part of this year's Holiday Lights , a public service to our community for those who want to see some of the best holiday creativity and fun in Austin!

Want even more Holiday Cheer?  KXAN will be broadcasting a 30-minute special from the Trail of Lights on Thursday, December 20 starting at 8pm.  Anchors Robert Hadlock and Leslie Rhode will be on hand to bring viewers all the excitement the Trail of Lights has to offer, including special performances by Jonathas from season 2 of NBC's hit show, The Voice, and the Lamar Middle School Band and Choir.  There will also be a behind the scenes look at the Trail of Lights and special appearances by Mayor Lee Leffingwell and the big man himself all the way from the North Pole.  It all wraps up with a virtual horse-drawn carriage ride through the lights.

KXAN and the Trail of Lights would like to thank the following sponsors:
