"Never let them see you dumb" is the motto of a new reading series in Austin that promises to build a community of learning, laughter and appreciation of the arts.
The Encyclopedia Show is a live variety show that commissions local and touring artists from many disciplines to use their talents to present a different verbal encyclopedia entry each month.
July15th's encyclopedic topic is: Vice Presidents. Each of the evening's artists will be presenting original pieces on some of the lesser-known characters who shared the presidential spotlight in our nation's history. Joe Biden and Sarah Palin will share the stage with obscure names like Charles Dawes and Alexander Stephens.
But don't expect any monotone history lessons here. Since the show's format is open, the invited performers come from a variety of performance backgrounds. The material they write can get silly, raunchy and sometimes incredibly personal. Each performer decides how to best share their relationship with the topic assigned.
Among this month's performers is local singer/songwriter Southpaw Jones . Known for his clever lyrics and folksy instruments, Jones will be dedicating his piece to the first female VP candidate, Geraldine Ferraro.
The show takes place on the third Thursday of every month. Doors open at 7:30pm for drinks and video pre-show, and the show begins promptly at 8:13pm. Cost is $6 at the door.
