AUSTIN (KXAN) - Front Steps/Austin Resource Center for the Homeless has been awarded a $299,000 grant from One Star Foundation and can now re-start a program that was shut down in 2010 after funding cuts.
Keep Austin Housed AmeriCorps Program has hired 23 new case managers who will work with homeless adults, youth and families at eight area nonprofit agencies.
Six AmeriCorps members will increase case management services by more than 50 percent at Casa Marianella and Posada Esperanza. At Safe Place, three members will work with homeless teenagers and young adults in the transitional shelter, emergency shelter and resource center. Three members will assist Caritas with Permanent Supportive Housing programs.
Front Steps gains the services of two members, who will serve in crucial case management roles, implement the Cold Weather Shelter Program and manage blanket distribution throughout the winter months.
AmeriCorps members commit a year of their lives to service and in return receive a living stipend, money for college, professional development opportunities, and health care and childcare for full-time members.
Front Steps is currently seeking food donations for monthly trainings and professional development seminars for members.
