A NOAA Weather Radio is truly your first line of defense from dangerous Texas storms. But, they are much more than that. Weather radios broadcast continuous weather information from our local National Weather Service, so even when there isn’t severe weather, you always have current conditions and forecasts at the touch of a button.

And, when a severe storm threatens, a weather radio is your own personal tornado siren. It will automatically sound an alarm if a severe weather watch or warning is issued for your area. The broadcast will then follow, with detailed information about the storm.

In addition, in conjunction with federal, state, and local emergency managers and other public officials, the radios also broadcast warning and post-event information for other types of hazards – including natural (such as earthquakes or avalanches), environmental (such as chemical releases or oil spills), and public safety (such as AMBER alerts or 911 Telephone outages).

Tornado warnings were broadcast on NOAA weather radios 10-20 minutes or longer before most tornadoes, giving people plenty of time to seek shelter. Even a former KXAN viewer, now living in North Carolina, credited her weather radio for saving her family’s life, as they heard the radio alert, and went to their basement just moments before their home was destroyed.
